Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) just held a breakthrough hearing on combating violence against women, featuring the need to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and pass the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA).
Seven – count them – seven women Senators testified: Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Patty Murray (D-WA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). It was an iconic moment.
Not only did the women Senators testify, but Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Assistant Senate Majority Leader and Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) attended the hearing and strongly supported CEDAW and IVAWA.
Both CEDAW and IVAWA have been held up for years. Now, there’s finally momentum again.
