Today the Feminist Majority thanks the Senators who made history filibustering the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and condemns the move by Senate Republicans to employ the “nuclear option.” Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smeal released the following statement:
“We want to thank the Democratic and Independent Senators who stood strong for human rights and the environment today. The Democratic and Independent Senators heard the voices of their constituents who came to town halls, district offices and Capitol Hill to express their concerns over a right-wing takeover of the Supreme Court.”
“Neil Gorsuch is a right-wing ideologue handpicked by the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society, and promoted by dark money. It is no wonder that he typically favors corporate interests over everyday people. The actions of all 52 Republican Senators today to change decades old rules requiring 60 votes to confirm a lifetime appointed Justice to the highest Court in our land will further polarize our country.”
“If his confirmation is forced through tomorrow by a mere 52 Senate Republicans, Gorsuch will in all likelihood become the most right-wing Justice currently on the Court. We hope we’re wrong.”
Thank you to the massive coalition of women’s rights, civil rights, labor, LGBTQ rights, environmental justice, and people with disabilities’ advocacy groups who fought shoulder to shoulder to stop Neil Gorsuch.
