Washington, D.C. – On Feb. 10, the National Organization for Women (NOW) formally announced their new campaign, Disrupt NOW. Partner organizations for this campaign include the Feminist Majority, Transformative Justice Coalition, Mana National, One Fair Wage, Common Cause, National Council of Jewish Women, League of Women Voters and the ERA Coalition.
National NOW President Christian F. Nunes explained that Disrupt NOW is a response to misogyny, propaganda and harm to women’s autonomy, economic potential and safety. The campaign will work to train activists and candidates alongside The Campaign School at Yale University (TCS) on combating misinformation and disinformation, which were prevalent in last year’s election.
“We must continue to do the work. We must show up, not give up,” said National NOW President Christian F. Nunes. “I remind myself of all the work done to get us this far, and we must keep marching forward.”
NOW will host town halls around the country in a two-year campaign to hear from the people, educate the public on issues they are concerned with and allow NOW and its allies to decide how to interject on these issues. This will ensure that people understand how policies impact their everyday lives on the federal, state, and local levels.
Disrupt NOW will be a nationwide effort to show people they are not alone in their struggles and teach them how to “disrupt hate and lean into hope in activism,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters.
Disrupt NOW will primarily focus on healthcare, the economy and women’s safety. Health priorities include access to adequate healthcare, reproductive justice and bodily autonomy. The organizations are also advocating for fair wages, pay equity, protecting federal workers’ jobs and improving the care economy via paid leave, childcare and more. The final priority, safety, covers sexual assault, gender-based violence, mass deportations and immigration detention, where partner organizations are concerned about unsanitary conditions, assault, and lack of access to period supplies.
“It is important for groups to come together and say, not in our name,” said Sheila Katz, CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women. She also highlighted the scapegoating rhetoric that laid the groundwork for the Holocaust, saying, “It is not a small thing to have groups coming together to resist propaganda and advocate for each other.”
Feminist Majority supports these efforts and will continue its campaigns on codifying the federal Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), pushing for state ERAs, defending independent abortion clinics, and mobilizing high school and college students. Feminist Majority is also ramping up support of Title IX as threats intensify and plans to organize in Virginia around the upcoming statewide elections.
