Below is the statement of Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority, on the upcoming House Judiciary Committee hearing regarding the removal of the timeline for the passage of the ERA:

“With the decisive win for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the Virginia state legislative races last week, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler has called for a markup session tomorrow for a resolution to remove any time limit for ERA passage. The resolution is expected to be approved by the committee and will move the House floor for passage.

With the Virginia state legislature poised to ratify the ERA in early 2020, the U.S. House is moving to register its support. The ERA has overwhelming support in public opinion polls today, finally the ERA is in the homestretch and political leaders are rushing to support it not only in Washington, but nationwide.

We are hearing from ERA supporters throughout the nation that support for the ERA is so strong it is clear this time it will not be stopped. The new chant is “In our lifetime we will be equal!” and it’s about time in the 21st century that everyone has full equality under the U.S. Constitution.”
