Letter to the Editor

Sample Letter to the Editor

In this first year of the Biden-Harris Administration, there is a real opportunity to make Constitutional history by adding to it the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

The ERA simply says: “equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.”

Now is the time for Congress to recognize there can be no time limit on equality by removing the arbitrary time limit for the states to consider the ERA.  The needed 38 state legislatures have already ratified the amendment and Congress needs to recognize their approval.

The House of Representatives has already passed the resolution and when the Senate adopts it, the ERA could become part of the Constitution this year.

All supporters should write a letter, send an email or make a phone call to their Senators and tell them there is no time limited on equality.

Tips on writing a letter to the editor:

Most newspapers and some broadcast stations have on their website guidelines for submitting a Letter to the Editor.

Generally, they want between 150 and 175 words, include your name and contact information, and don’t forget weekly community outlets. Many papers ran the Associated Press story about recent court activities or will likely do a piece about the House vote the week of March 15. Be bold, refute, advocate and add a call to action – write your Senator
