Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority, issued the following statement at the conclusion of the first day of the Democratic Convention:

“Democrats made clear today that this election is about the choices women make–for our bodies, our health, and our families. Most importantly, as the gender gap illustrates, the choice women make on November 6 will determine if this country continues the progress we have made on women’s rights or if we retreat and lose the gains of the past three decades.

From Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth’s inspirational story, to Lilly Ledbetter’s tireless and triumphant fight for equal pay, to Julián Castro’s touching tribute to his mother and grandmother, and culminating with First Lady Michelle Obama’s heartfelt reflection on the last four years, there is no question that the speakers today embodied the Democratic party’s and the Obama Administration’s historic commitment to issues critical to women and families.

This was not rhetoric; it was a display of their record. Each speaker showed the depth of the commitment of the struggles for women.”
