Honoring Trailblazers for Women's Rights

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, Lifetime Achievement Award
Slaughter made history as the first woman on the all-powerful House Rules Committee, as its first woman chair (2007-2011) and now as its first woman ranking member. As Chair, she was indispensable in the passage of the Affordable Care Act and key in producing what has been considered one of the most productive four years in the history of the House. Founder and co-chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, Slaughter is a strong voice and strategist in the fight against the attacks on Planned Parenthood, abortion, and birth control.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Fearless Trailblazer Award
As we mark the 39th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, which denies poor women access to abortion, Lee's work is vitally important for women across the country. She recently introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act, to finally end the Hyde Amendment and ensure Medicaid coverage for abortion for low-income women.

Congresswoman Donna Edwards, Fearless Trailblazer Award
Before running for public office, Congresswoman Edwards co-founded the National Network to End Domestic Violence and served as the organization's first executive director. She also made history in 2008 when she became the first African-American woman to represent Maryland in Congress. As a member of Congress, she has been a champion for women's rights, civil rights, and economic justice as well as stopping violence against women.

Amy Hagstrom Miller, Courage Award
As the Founder, President and CEO of Whole Woman’s Health, a feminist organization committed to providing holistic care for women, Hagstrom Miller has been on the frontlines ensuring access to abortion. Whole Woman’s Health is the lead plaintiff in the legal challenge against Texas’ restrictive abortion law. The Supreme Court will soon decide whether to hear the case, Whole Woman's Health v. Cole, the most significant challenge to abortion access to come before the Court in many years. Hagstrom Miller is also the founder of Shift, a non-profit organization to educate and build community power to transform the political and cultural landscape around abortion and reproductive health.
