Obama Scores, Especially Among Women

Statement of Eleanor Smeal on Presidential Debate 3

President Barack Obama’s command of the facts, clear vision, and humanitarian concern trumped Mitt Romney all night. Romney was reduced to agreeing with President Obama on most major foreign policy issues.

As much as Romney tried, President Obama did not let Romney “airbrush history.” Obama kept reminding Romney of his actual stated positions on issue after issue. Obama pointed out Romney was all over the place on key foreign policies issues. Even on domestic issues, Romney was reduced to meekly saying, “I love teachers.”

The gender gap ruled tonight as Romney toned down his saber rattling on Iran and a host of other issues in a futile effort to attract women’s votes. Romney’s toting of gender
equality abroad rang hollow. He does not support reproductive rights for women at home or abroad. He has no position on CEDAW (the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) and has promised to reinstate the Global Gag Rule on day one. Domestically, he does not even support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act or
the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Mitt Romney’s hollow rhetoric is not sincere and is not fooling women.
