The Feminist Majority PAC announced its support today for Elizabeth Warren in her bid to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate. In recent polls, Warren is now ahead in both the primary election against seven Democrats, and against Republican incumbent Senator Scott Brown.

In her campaign announcement video, Warren said, “The middle class has been chipped at, hacked at, squeezed and hammered for a generation now, and I don’t think Washington gets it.” Feminist Majority PAC believes Warren will be a feminist leader in the Senate who will fight not only for women and consumer’s financial interests, but also for women’s rights, including reproductive rights.

“Elizabeth Warren is an influential advocate whose leadership on financial issues is recognized nationwide. She is relentless in protecting middle class consumers, and she has proven that she will not back down even in spite of the many powerful interests that have tried to push her down,” said Eleanor Smeal, Feminist Majority President. “I have every confidence that she will be a national leader on financial issues for women, and a strong advocate for women’s rights. Warren will ensure that Wall Street and the trillion-dollar companies no longer take advantage of America’s consumers, taxpayers, and working families.”

In 2008, at the request of President Barack Obama, Warren served as the driving force behind the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which holds major financial institutions accountable and protects consumers.

Smeal concluded, “Elizabeth Warren is a formidable candidate for the United States Senate for Massachusetts. With only 17 women out of 100 Senators, the women and families of Massachusetts and the nation need Elizabeth Warren’s creativity, tenacity, leadership, and passion in the fight for a fair financial deal.”
