Shelley Adler

Shelley Adler (D), is running for Congress to unseat Tea Party Republican Congressman Jon Runyan in New Jersey’s third district (south central NJ). While raising the possibility of a gender shake-up in New Jersey’s 15-member all-male U.S. House delegation, Shelley Adler hopes to reclaim this seat that Runyan took from her husband, the late Congressman John Adler.

Background

Shelley graduated from Harvard Law School with honors and became the first in her family to become a lawyer. While at Harvard, Shelley and her husband became the co-managing editors of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. Cofounded the Southwest New Jersey Council of the Anti-Defamation League. During her four years on the city council, she held the line on taxes for cash-strapped residents. Opponent

Jon Runyan is a former NFL player who has backed the GOP down the line since taking office, voting with party 92% of the time. He supports dangerous restrictions on reproductive rights and voted for the Ryan budget to end Medicare. Runyan defeated John Adler 50%-47% in 2010 by some 6,000 votes.
