Michelle Lujan Grisham won a highly contested June 5th Democratic primary for U.S. Congress in New Mexico’s 1st District (Albuquerque). In addition to her devotion to economic issues, Lujan Grisham is a passionate advocate of affordable health care, women’s rights, and clean energy.


Over the past twenty years, Lujan Grisham has served as the Director of the State Agency on Aging and as a Bernalillo County Commissioner, among other leadership roles. During this time, she: Fought for New Mexico's Commission on the Status of Women. Led the movement in New Mexico to legalize the rights of same-sex partners to make health care decisions for their partners. Pushed for comprehensive sex-education in New Mexico's schools. Personally went undercover to expose inadequate care in nursing homes.

Position on Key Issues

Lujan Grishman is a strong supporter of women's rights and the right to choose. She advocates to increase women's access to quality affordable health care. She supports fair pay, access to quality affordable child care and passage of the Violence Against Women Act.


For Lujan Grisham, winning the primary election has brought her one step closer to being the first female Democrat from New Mexico in Congress. This is a competitive district that leans Democrat. Her impressive fundraising skills have given her an extra advantage so far.


Lujan Grisham is running for an open seat (incumbent Congressman Heinrich (D) is running for U.S. Senate) against Republican Janice Arnold-Jones, who previously served as a state representative for New Mexico's legislature for eight years.
