Kyrsten Sinema

Kyrsten Sinema (D) is running for the brand new 9th district congressional seat in Arizona (East Phoenix, Tempe, parts of Scottsdale). A former member of the Arizona House of Representatives and the Arizona State Senate, attorney, activist and former social worker, Sinema is a defiant adversary to Arizona’s extremist governor.

Kyrsten has earned several state and national accolades, including being named to Time Magazine's 2011 "40 under 40" list of rising stars in politics. She served as Chair of both the successful 2006 Arizona Together campaign, which defeated the state's same-sex marriage ban initiative, and the 2008 Protect America's Freedom coalition, which defeated an anti-affirmative action movement. She published a book about building winning coalitions – a topic in which she has clearly demonstrated proficiency. Kyrsten has fought to improve benefits and services for veterans and their families, from increasing access to college to minimizing economic strain for family members forced to relocate due to military deployment. Kyrsten's earned Planned Parenthood's 2006 Legislative CHOICE award due to her strong leadership against numerous anti-choice measures in the state legislature.

Position on Key Issues

She made strengthening education, promoting renewable energy and creating high-tech jobs her top priorities – while fighting to preserve women's health and responsible sex education. Additionally, she firmly opposed right-wing Gov. Jan Brewer's virulent anti-family, anti-immigrant policies. If elected, Sinema will be the first openly bisexual woman ever elected to Congress.

Sinema has the grassroots skills necessary to swiftly organize for this new district. This is a highly competitive district which leans Democratic.

Sinema is running against Republican candidate Vernon Parker.
