Joyce Beatty won the March 6, 2012 Democratic primary for Ohio’s newly formed 3rd District (Columbus, OH). She had recently stepped down from her position as Ohio State University Senior Vice President to resume her legislative career. Beatty previously served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 until 2008.

In her tenure as state representative, Beatty supported legislation that aided economic development, education, and healthcare. Beatty advocated for STEM and financial literacy education, and helped to secure $400 million in Race to the Top funding for Ohio. Beatty has also been recognized as an incredible advocate for affordable healthcare through her work providing cervical and breast cancer screenings to uninsured working women. Beatty also served as the: First female Democratic House Leader in Ohio history First African American Assistant Minority Leader in the Ohio House First woman to represent the Columbus area House District Member of: NAACP Columbus, National Association of Women Business Owners, and Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) Strong support of women's rights and civil rights

Beatty supports the Affordable Care Act has been a long advocate on health care issues. As a stroke survivor herself and now a member of the National American Heart Association board, she understands that access to affordable health care is essential.

Beatty is expected to win in this strongly Democratic district. In addition, Beatty's relationship with the community and her extensive legislative and policy experience strengthen her campaign.

Beatty is running against Republican candidate Chris Long, former City Councilman of Reynoldsburg.
